Research

In my practice as a choreographer and scholar, body and movement are focal points in my investigation. The defining question of my research is: How does movement embody the corporeal enactment of social relations and the conceptualization of the political culture of gesture? In this vein, I investigate the meaning of movement and the body, not only in theatrical performances, but also in the enacted spaces of visual arts, social events, and cultural rituals. My exploration of the expanded definitions of movement and body is informed and shaped by concepts from dance and performance studies in dialogue with critical theory from philosophy, cultural, and political studies. My research encompasses a broad range of topics and subjects. Yet there is an overarching theme: dance and movement as a disruption of existing cultural and political codes through the conjunction of practice and theory. My focus is on practice as research through staging original experimental performances and writing as a form of performance and choreography. In my investigations, body and movement are constantly tracing new contexts for critical interventions and developments.
