Gesturing Between Here and ‘The Beyond’: Refugees/Migration

This work is an interdisciplinary research-creation in progress. It is the staging of an original choreography, Gesturing Between Here and ‘The Beyond’. My main concern in this work is the embodied thought and physical inscription of both broad migration movements and the specific gestures of refugees, military forces, and performers. It explores how they relate to crucial questions of survival and death. The central thread in my investigation is this: How do displaced bodies experience the elusive notion of “home” in a transgressional and hostile environment? The production of this experimental choreography conveys the cultural, social, and historical knowledge of the diverse communities living within and across the borders of Morocco and Spain, touching on themes that echo across other border spaces around the world.
